MACHINE SHOPS

The machine shop industry is one of the most important material removal and modification methods. It is a collection of material-working processes in which power-driven machine tools, such as saws, lathes, milling machines, and drill presses, are used with a sharp cutting tool to mechanically cut the material to achieve the desired geometry.

Advantages of plastics

The advantages of plastics for Machine Shops are numerous. Plastics are much lighter than metal, which equate into better fuel economy and cheaper to manufacture parts. Additionally, the lighter weight aids in safer material handling. Plastics can be designed to be impact and dent resistant, and modified for improved strength. Corrosion resistance, color and texture flexibility, the economical components and aesthetics are other advantages of plastics.

Materials Utilized Within Industry

Materials used by machine shops to create parts with characteristics outside of the range of non-plastic materials include Nylon, UHMW, ULTEM, Acetal/Delrin, PVC, PEEK, PET and PTFE (rod, tube and plate).
